Who started the diamond engagement ring tradition?

Did you know that according to documents, Archduke Maximilian of Austria, is the first man who used a diamond ring as an engagement ring when he proposed to Mary of Burgundy in the imperial court of Vienna in 1477, and since then all the wealthy people liked the idea and followed in his footsteps, and this is how the tradition began.
